We all know that reading is vital for writers.
Summer is now with us, which is a great time to catch up with your reading of children’s books.
This will make sure you’re headed in the right direction with your writing.
I have a request – if you enjoy these free writing tips, would you please buy a Dernier book or two, then write a review for it? I would be so grateful!
If you are in the UK, you can order books from anywhere you usually buy books, including Christian bookshops and online book stores, or direct from the Dernier Publishing website!

If you live outside of the UK, you can buy many of our titles from Amazon.
Here are three things to look out for in the stories you read:
- Characters. How engaging are they? Are there enough? Too many?
- Plot. Is it too complicated? Or not exciting enough?
- Did you want to keep reading? What was it about the book that made you want to put it down/now want to put it down?
All this is useful stuff for your own story! Read with a journal in hand, and write down anything useful you think of, as you read.
After reading the book, gleaning what you can from it from the writing point of view, you will then have a book you can lend out or give away and multiply the blessing!
Trust that helps,
Janet
P.S. If you’re writing for 6-9s you might like Nobody’s Dog; for 8-11s, try The Dove Stone. For girls, try the Beech Bank Girls (UK only). For older teens, try The City Kid, which is currently on offer. And of course there are lots more. 🙂
