Why Plan Your Novel?

Hello again, and here we are with a new creative writing tip for you.

Some people love to plan their novels – most of us are so eager to get on with our creative writing, that we miss out this step.

But I do recommend that you write an outline for your story.

Why? Well, although writing a story outline before you start writing seems like a lot of extra, pointless work, believe me, it will save you loads of time in the end.

Once you have an outline, you will know where you’re heading. It will crush the overwhelming feeling of confusion about where your story is going, and keep you on track. Something like a bridge – it will help you get to the end.

Once you have an outline, you will know where you’re heading. It will crush the overwhelming feeling of confusion about where your story is going, and keep you on track.

You’ll have your theme in mind, your plot, and will know where your characters are finally heading (and why).

It’s a bit like sharpening your tools before beginning a job. I very much recommend it, after learning from experience that not having a plan means the story will meander, changes will need to be made, and I will get in a muddle with it all!

We all vary, of course. Some of you might like to make a detailed plan. Others may need just a short paragraph. This might change along the way, but that’s OK – better to have a plan and change it, than have no plan at all!

Do you like to plan? Let me know – always love to hear from you.

Every blessing,

Janet
