Dogs Please Close the Gate

Dear Writers,

I hope you are having a good summer. I recently spent a week in the Yorkshire Dales – what a beautiful place!

They also have very clever dogs in Yorkshire…

This is a real sign that I found on holiday! It made me smile and I thought I’d share it with you. 🙂

Of course we know what they mean. They have dogs, so they don’t want their dogs to get out into the road. It’s not a request for dogs to close the gate as they come and go…

But it’s a great reminder that punctuation is important.

“Shoot, Granny!” is very different from “Shoot Granny!” The context, of course, is important, but still, better get it right (especially if you’re Granny, hehe!).

How can you make sure you don’t make an error?

Here are four ideas:

  • Read your work out loud
  • Give your work to an editor before it goes out into the world
  • Read, read, read. You will learn by example.
  • Get a book on punctuation. It can be tricky, after all!

Do you agree? If you have any other ideas, let me know (and if you see any funny signs, send them to me and I’ll pass them on – let’s keep the smiles coming!

With love in Christ,

Janet
