We had an interesting discussion about the role of the antagonist in a recent Writers for a Reason Unite meeting.
It can be confusing, so here are a few quick thoughts:
- Your protagonist and your antagonist will both will have flaws, but their aims will be different.
- Your protagonist will be working for a higher good
- Your antagonist will be working for their own good.
(Yes that’s me, hehe, in Portland Castle!)
Do you see what I mean about the motives?
Your protagonist may be saving their life, but there’s usually a higher reason to act, to go along with the selfish one!
Whereas your antagonist will probably be motivated mostly by greed, selfishness, pride and power…
These are generalisations, but you get the picture, I hope!
Any questions, why not come along to our next Unite group? We take the time at the beginning of every meeting, to answer any questions writers have. We’d love to have you!
Have a great writing week,
Janet
