Hi folks,
This is our third week on the Descriptions theme – hope you’re enjoying the practice!
So why are descriptions so important?
What you’re looking to do, is to add vibrant details that will bring your scene, a person, or an item, to life in your readers’ mind. You want them to be so immersed in the story that they could almost feel they are there.
This week, I’d like you to take your protagonist to church with you. Yes, an imaginary friend!

See your church, through their eyes.
The place, the people, the noise, the singing, the preaching, the children, the refreshments… see it all from your protagonist’s point of view. If they can be coming to church at a particular point in your story, that would be great! Perhaps they’ve just been chased by a dragon, failed a test, got a big decision to make… What emotions are they feeling right now? This will colour the way they see the scene.
(You don’t have to use this in your novel, of course – but even if you don’t, it’s a great exercise to help you get right into the mind and emotions of your protagonist.)
Over to you!
Enjoy this fun exercise… if you do it, send it to me – I’d love to hear all about your church, and your characters’ visit!
Every blessing,
Janet
P.S. One thing this shows, is how unique you are. No one can write your novel but you! And don’t forget, if you’ve been called to write, someone is waiting for it. So don’t give up, OK?
