What to Do When You Can’t Write

What do we do when we can’t write? Should we feel guilty?

We all have times in our life when we can’t write. There are just too many other things needing our attention. It might be that we have small children, elderly parents, an illness, have to do overtime at work… and a million other things!

At these times, please don’t feel guilty about taking the time out that you need from your stories, whether it’s a week or two, several months or even several years.

There is a time for everything under the sun. Sometimes you just need time to take care of yourself.

Feeling guilty isn’t going to help anyone!

Why not grab your writing journal and take five minutes to pray through your situation, and jot down some thoughts on the following two questions:

  1. How long should you take a break for, before looking again at the situation?
  2. Is there anything you could do in the meantime, to keep up with your story?

The answer might be no! But it may be that even though you can’t keep up with your actual book, you could:

  • read writing tips
  • collect images/ideas for reference
  • jot down notes about your characters
  • read books
  • add your own idea here.

Hope this is helpful for those of you who are struggling right now. Don’t forget, the Lord is with you!

Every blessing,

Janet
