Getting Vocabulary Right

Dear Writer Friends,

A little while ago, a writer-for-a-reason asked me how would she could find out what level of vocabulary to use with the age group she is writing for – she didn’t want to make it too simple, but didn’t want to make it too hard to read, either.

Here are two suggestions, in case you have the same issue:

1. Spend time with your target audience. You really can’t beat this for research!

2. Read books they love. You will see what level of vocabulary is suitable for the age group you are writing for, but also pick up many more tips, such a sentence structure, length of chapters and much more.

You don’t have to copy what other authors have done, of course, but getting an idea of what is around, liked and respected is an excellent first step in planning your own story.

I hope that’s helpful.

Have fun, and I’ll be back soon!

Every blessing,

Janet
