Good morning Christian Writers! This writing tip comes to you from London on a beautiful sunny day . . .
This may seem obvious, and I’m probably preaching to the choir here, but unless you have an excellent reason for not doing so, the first person you need to introduce your readers to is your protagonist. This is especially true if you are writing for children.
If readers begin to build up their interest in a minor character before they have met your protagonist, and start to engage with them and feel for them, it can be a let down if that character then becomes a ‘bit part’.
There are exceptions, of course (there are always exceptions!), but do bear this in mind. The last thing you want to do is to confuse your readers!
Just occasionally I am sent an unsolicited manuscript where this is an obvious issue; not often – but something I thought worth emphasising.
