Write Every Day If You Can

Write Every Day If You Can

Back in the summer holidays, I wrote a bunch of quick writing tips for you (25 in all!). As I was thinking about what would help you most, I thought perhaps that unpacking each of these in a bit more depth would be useful.

So that’s what I decided to do – and here’s the first one:

Write Every Day if You Can.

We’ve all been there – we leave our story for a week or two (or even longer…) and by the time we get back to it, we have to re-read it all over again before we can get round to actually writing.

Then we do this again, and again, until we’ve lost the thread.

Been there? I know I have!

How can we get over this constant problem? After all, we’re busy people!

Here’s my honest and best advice: write every day.

Even if it’s only ten minutes.

I know, I know – when are you going to fit that in? And what can you write in ten minutes?

Well, as for the timing, I’ll have to leave that to you, but I’m sure you could find ten minutes somewhere in your day.

And it’s true, of course – you can’t write much in ten minutes. But the big thing is, it keeps your story top of mind, so you never lose the thread. If you add a paragraph or two, or a snatch of dialogue, or a description every day, little by little your novel will come together.

Of course, if you can spare more than ten minutes a day (and sometimes you will), your novel will come on much faster. In fact, you might even surprise yourself how quickly your novel gets done!

So why not decide, right now – when could you carve out your ten minutes? In the early morning? During your coffee break when you usually scroll through social media? Lunch time? While everyone else is washing up (well, you can try!!!), or when everyone else is in bed, if that doesn’t work? 🙂

Let me know how that goes, and I’ll see you here next week with the next tip!

Peace be with you,

Janet
